How to get rid of unwanted hair

Since time immemorial, we women have always struggled to get rid of the unsightly hair that Nature has given us. Today men have also joined in our struggle, but what can we do to get rid of these undesirable hairs? Would you like some information on the hair-removal methods that exist today? After carefully reading this article, you’ll be able to choose the hair-removal technique that best adapts to your needs.

Razor hair removal. Is it OK to shave to get rid of hair?

This method does not remove hairs from the root but shaves them on the surface level of the skin. Today we have new types of feminine shaving razors that adapt perfectly to different body areas and include a lubricating material (generally aloe) at the base, leaving the skin soft and moisturized. What’s more, after shaving, you can apply a hair-removal cream that will calm your skin. Undoubtedly, this method of hair removal will not take up much of your time, as all you have to do is apply shaving cream on your skin and shave. However, we only recommend this hair-removal method for going over an area in case of an emergency, as the hair will start to come out stronger, although not in greater quantities, as people say. Even so, sensitive skin products do exist that reduce the risk of allergy to this type of hair removal. As you shave your skin, you are exfoliating it and you can shave anytime, anywhere.

Hair-removing cream: efficient but brief.

Removing hair with cream is a chemical method that has thyoglicolic acid salts as the active ingredient. This acts on the aerial part of the hair, transforming the keratin in a few minutes into a soft, manageable mass that can be easily eliminated with a spatula or simply with water. It’s a fast hair-removal method (5 to 8 minutes), pain-free and comfortable. Don’t surpass the recommended waiting period for removing the cream, however, because you could get skin blotches. Special creams for sensitive skins also exist. Just as with shaving, your hair is cut but not removed from the root, even though creams are less aggressive on your skin than razors.

The areas at the calves and groin are the most likely to get stubborn, ingrown hair. Veet’s subcutaneous anti-hair cream avoids the horizontal growth of this type of hair, which makes hair removal difficult. Its formula includes alpha hydroxyl acids, which soften and finetune the skin so that the hair is less resistant upon its removal. With this hair-removal method, the skin does not run the risk of being cut and it also remains softer during a longer stretch of time, since the hair growth is softer and the epidermis is more moisturized.

At the same time, this hair-removal method does not last long and it’s slower than shaving. Previously, some creams irritated the skin and even had an unpleasant smell, but these problems have been solved through calming enrichment actives and by using perfumes with stable coverage power.

Warm or hot wax?

Hot waxing is by now a classic at beauty institutes. However, the appearance of cold waxes is substituting it since it can be harmful if one has varicose veins or circulation problems. Even so, it’s the most popular method and has many adherents that prefer it over warm waxing for a number of reasons, among them, that the new warm waxing techniques produce allergies and adverse reactions in sensitive skins.

On the market there is a diversity of types and the difference between them lies in their texture, color and fusion point, although all of them melt at an adequate temperature so as not to produce burns or malpractice. The procedure is the following:

- The area from which the hair is to be removed is disinfected. It’s helpful to sprinkle with talcum powder to ease hair extraction and remove any trace of moisture.

- The wax is extended in the direction of the hair growth and with a wood spatula because it’s an insulating material.

- Extra care is taken to produce very defined edges so that it will be easier to remove the wax. – The hair is removed in the direction opposite to the growth, taking care to press on the area, especially in very vascular areas like the groin and underarms.

- One tranquilizing secret is to press a hand to the area alter removing the strip of wax, since this tranquilizes and gives a sense of support.

- After finishing, you have to apply a product with moisturizing agents and skin decongestants. It can be any texture: gel, cream, foam…

Warm wax allows hair to be removed from the root without leaving the skin red and is recommended for women with circulation problems. It requires minimum heating, can even be done in the microwave and is soluble in water; it’s easier to remove any excess.

To remove hairs, you can also use ready-to-use wax strips. You don’t have to heat them up. All you have to do is rub them between your hands, apply them firmly on your skin and remove them in a sharp, quick movement. They are easy to use anywhere and whenever. Since they have the same temperature as the skin, they are even adequate for people with circulation problems. If you have a lot of hair, this method can be very long and bothersome; what’s more, it’s painful.

Another alternative: electric hair removal

This is a very efficient hair-removal method that extracts the hair from the roots through a series of small tweezers incorporated in the head of a little electric machine. While the first models were fairly painful, now the new epilators employ systems like a new distribution of the tweezers, massage or cold accessories that have notably reduced any discomfort. They are fast, comfortable and clean. Since they extract the hairs from the root, they are used every four weeks. The hair begins to progressively diminish, so that some qualify this method as semi-permanent. Today they also have accessories like special heads for sensitive areas and for previously softening and exfoliating the skin. This method does not activate a peeling like wax and some hairs tend to develop into a cyst in some areas where the skin is much thicker, as in the calves. It can be somewhat painful if you have a lot of hair. As of today they are not sufficiently advanced to be used in sensitive areas, even though some include special devices that shave instead of removing the hair.

Try Phillips’ new Satin Ice Optima HP 6459, which is an electric epilator with a cold effect that promises to reduce the pain and discomfort that eliminating hair from the root can cause. It has several advantages: a calming ice cartridge in a round and curved shape (for underarms and the bikini line), two speeds, and an exfoliating head that helps prevent ingrown hairs, in addition to a shaving head. Approx. price: 99,99 euros. Or Braun’s Silk-pil Soft Perfection Body Epilation incorporates a new distribution of tweezers, a massage system in four directions and, also, a special head for sensitive areas. Approx. price: 71,90 euros.

Laser: the definite hair-removal system?

It’s the revolution that liberates women with hair problems from the ordeal of waxes, razors, epilators… Lasting, painless and, apparently, secure.

Laser hair removal destroys the pilus follicle and the hair matrix through a laser discharged upon the area to be treated. It produces a highly concentrated ray of light. The color of the light produced by a concrete laser is key in its effect on the hair follicles. The melanin (a pigment present in all types of hair) absorbs the wave longitude, receiving heat until the matrix and the pilus follicle are destroyed, thus avoiding any future hair growth.

It’s too early to know if this hair-removal technique is truly definite. In Spain, it hasn’t been used for more than three years, and while the women who’ve used laser hair removal may not have hairs at this point, we don’t know whether hair growth will resume in five or 10 years. What is true is that at first they were recommending three to four sessions and now the average is around eight with intervals of two to three months, although that always depends on the type of hair and the area to be treated.

In general, a minimum of six sessions is needed, depending on each person, the area, etc. You have to keep in mind that during the first session the only hairs that are removed are the ones that are in the growth phase at that point (80 percent). After four weeks, a second session is applied to treat between 15 and 30 percent of the “dormant” hair. In the other sessions, the remaining hairs are eliminated. But beware: Patience is needed to suppress the successive hairs that will continue to surface during the next four to six months. The sessions can last between a few minutes and an hour. It depends on the area that’s being treated.

The biggest difficulty for laser is that not only does the hair contain melanin but also the skin, which can cause hipopigmentation blotches (white) on the darkest skins. The eyebrows are an area that are not recommended because of their proximity to the eyes (they require special protection).

The sensation is similar to a burn, but since it’s done quickly, it’s well tolerated. (The underarms are treated in eight minutes altogether.) People with darker skin feel a slight tingling or itching. For very ample areas or areas sensitive to pain, it’s recommended that an anesthetic cream be applied two hours before the treatment. Immediately after the laser hair removal, the treated area can get red or slightly inflamed, but these symptoms disappear in a short period of time.

Immediately after a laser session, the skin’s appearance varies in each patient depending on the extent of the treatment. The skin can get red or swell, but it shortly returns to its normal appearance. In some cases a slight burn similar to a hot oil splatter is produced and some problems of hiperpigmentation or hipopigmentation (blotches) may appear.

Laser hair removal must be done through a doctor because the European Union has this laser classified as type AA. That means that it is not invasive but aggressive, and any treatment of this type cannot be applied by non-medical personnel.

Let’s talk about prices, approximately and depending on which center: Underarms: approx. 480 Euros. Full legs: approx. 1200 Euros.. Upper lip: approx 360 Euros.

The hair-removal results are the following:

1. Between 80 and 90 percent of the hairs are eliminated. 2. Ten to 20 percent of the hair remains, but it’s much finer and sparse, so that aesthetically it’s less important. Possibility of a touching-up session in one to two years. Laser is a form of energy with visible light (many patients associate the word laser to carcenogenic but that’s not the case). With each session 20 to 30 percent of the hair is eliminated, but the results (bald areas and finer hair) start to be noticed starting with the third or fourth session.

Laser effect: To slow down and debilitate, progressively, the hair that continues growing. Precautions: If in doubt about tanned skin, it’s always best to test a specific area of the skin. We use 2 or 3 different energies and the reaction of the skin is evaluated in 24-40 hours.

Today, a male body builder is not the only person into removing hair from all over their body.

Aside from the fact that there are more and more female body builders, there are scores of everyday males and females who remove hair from all over their bodies.

Both in the media and on the street, an obvious example is how many males and females are into head shaving.

At the pool or the beach, and even on neighborhood basketball courts, it’s much more common to see males with smooth and hairless chests and backs. And even a few without armpit or leg hair.

And if you think about it, males in the media advertising underwear and fitness equipment don’t have any body hair. They have it removed because the current fashion in this society is for males to be hairless.

Some would say it’s about time they caught up with the females …

But the truth is – Today’s males ARE more aware of and conscientious about their overall image and removing body hair is a major means of projecting the most positive image. Besides, males have been learning what females have known ever since they started removing their body hair – There are some definite benefits to doing so.

Less body hair means less body heat. Less body heat means less body odor. And we can all support that.

But, perhaps even more of a benefit is the fact that removing body hair helps to define body shape. For females in particular, this applies to their legs. For males, their chests.

That’s why when body builders are getting their body ready for competition, they use some type of hair removal.

And because there is such a growing trend towards complete body hair removal these days, we look to body builders and other athletes for information about the best way to accomplish it.

But even for body builders, it hasn’t always been easy to connect with the, “perfect”, hair removal product or system.

Before the mid 90s, body builders relied mostly on services employing people who became their personal body shaver. These people used a wet razor to remove the hair from the body builder’s entire body a few hours before a competition. Then they’d oil them down.

After the mid 90s, body builders began relying on laser hair removal treatments. But that didn’t really work out so well.

Partly because the high cost of the treatments took a big chunk of their competition winnings, but mostly because their entire body couldn’t be made completely hairless in one session, or even two or three. So there was the time factor.

Then there were the unsavory side effects of swelling, redness and maybe even some blistering, that often kept body builders from competitions, even if they completed the treatments well ahead of time. When people started coming up with scars – that was pretty much it.

So many body builders returned to the tried and true body shaver.

But that’s not to say that many body builders haven’t experimented with a variety of other alternatives to laser hair removal.

The main laser hair removal alternative methods include: electrolysis, waxing, depilatories, and the old stand by, shaving.

Electrolysis may be the only hair removal method that has been proven to be permanent, and that would seem ideal for a body builder, but –

Because electrolysis involves treating each individual hair follicle, (the skin depression from which the hair emerges), it is also the most time consuming hair removal method. It can take years of weekly or monthly sessions to completely remove all hairs in just one area. And –

Because electrolysis involves inserting a fine wire alongside the hair shaft into the hair follicle through which an electric current and/or strong chemical is sent down to destroy the growth source, (papilla), at the end of the hair, it is also quite painful, even for mighty body builders, even with the use of a topical anesthetic. And –

Electrolysis has some of the worst temporary side effects – Swelling, redness, pinpoint scabbing and skin discoloration, and worse, the possible permanent effects of skin discoloration and scarring.

Add to all of that – Electrolysis is the next most expensive method of hair removal.

So it’s easy to see why electrolysis is not a viable laser hair removal alternative for body builders.

A hair removal method that isn’t as expensive, can last for 3-8 weeks and would seem viable for body builders is waxing. And because waxing can be done on the entire body in one session, it would seem ideal for a body builder, but –

Waxing basically involves applying a warmed taffy like substance to the hairs in an area, then cloth strips, all of which are allowed a moment to cool and adhere to the hairs and then the strips are very quickly removed, pulling the hairs out by their roots.

Obviously, this hair removal method is pretty painful, so a topical anesthetic is recommended. But that’s not the real problem.

The real problem is that while the wax is adhering to the hairs, unfortunately, it’s also adhering to the skin. Which means when the cloth strips are yanked off, sometimes so is some of the skin. Understandably, this leads to some swelling, rawness and redness.

Usually, if waxing is done several days ahead of time and they stay out of direct sunlight, a body builder’s skin is able to heal for competition. Usually … There have been some complications such as infected ingrown hairs and other infections that have left scars.

Which means waxing is not the best laser hair removal alternative.

A host of body builders use the hair removal product of a depilatory to remove all of their body hair. It’s an inexpensive method that can remove hair on the chest, back, underarms, hair in the bikini line area ONLY and legs quickly, easily and painlessly for a few days, but – You knew there had to be a but –

A depilatory employs strong chemicals that basically, “melt”, the hairs above the skin, which can then be wiped from the skin surface.

Problem is, hair and skin are composed of similar materials so that these harsh chemicals that melt the hair can also burn the skin and cause swelling, redness, bumps, ingrown hairs and even scarring.

So using a depilatory hair removal product is still not the best laser hair removal alternative.

Which is why many a body builder is still a body shaver when it comes to inexpensive, reliable and relatively safe hair removal that, when done properly, provides smooth results.

Sure, there’s only one way to receive a, “razor burn”, and that’s by shaving. And it’s possible to get scrapes, nicks and cuts, as well as rashes, bumps and ingrown hairs from shaving, but –

These are minor side effects as compared to all other hair removal methods. And they can be covered with make up if need be. (Yes, make up is worn by body builders, when necessary.)

And shaving truly can be done on any part of a body builder’s body. In fact, if it happens to be part of their overall presentation, there’s really no other way a body builder can achieve a beautiful bald head than by head shaving.

These then are the hair removal experiences and results of body builders from which the everyday person can learn.

Although there is one more method of hair removal for all body shavers, including those into head shaving – It’s still shaving, but with an inexpensive tool designed to easily, quickly, and most importantly, safely provide clean, close, and smooth hair removal – All over your body.

Whether you’re male or female, at some point in your life, hair removal becomes an issue to come to terms with.

There are people who choose to allow all of their body hair to just grow, wherever, however. Then there are people who don’t want hair on some part(s) of their body at all so they elect to undergo the expensive, extensive and painful experience of electrolysis – The only hair removal process that has been proven to be permanent.

Between these two ends of the spectrum of what to do with body hair, most people remove hair from some part(s) of their body and, depending on the body part, hair and skin type, employ a variety of processes to do so.

Let’s start at the top, shall we?

For those males, and females, who enjoy having a bald head, there is no better hair removal process than shaving. And while there are those within this group who get very satisfactory results with one of the newer tri-blade razors, true aficionados of the smooth, shiny and healthy looking scalp say there is nothing to compare with the results achieved with a straight edged razor – Once you know how.

Shaving, either with a wet razor or an electric shaver, is the traditional way most males remove their facial hair. Although today, there are wet and dry shavers that are gaining in popularity.

For some males, convinced they’re really female and committed to becoming one, the process of electrolysis is sometimes employed to eradicate the facial hairs hormone treatments don’t affect. Just as many females endure electrolysis to remove unwanted hairs on their face.

But again, most females and transsexuals opt for alternatives such as tweezing or depilatories specifically formulated for the face, as opposed to electrolysis. For these people seeking a smooth and hairless face, shaving is not an option.

When it comes to chest hair – Some females seek electrolysis, but most often simply tweeze hairs from around the areola, (about the nipple of the breast). But because males have such a large area to contend with, electrolysis really isn’t a viable hair removal process. Neither are laser hair removal treatments simply because of the cost and time involved.

So most males who desire to remove their chest hair often go to a salon and get it waxed. Or regularly apply a depilatory or shave.

This applies to the back as well. Although to effectively use a depilatory or razor/shaver on his back, obviously a male needs a friendly accomplice.

While we’re still dealing with the upper part of the body, there are the armpits, for which shaving is the most popular process. Depilatories are not recommended because the caustic chemicals can be too easily absorbed. And waxing, well, it’s an option, but not a popular one because it’s s-o-o-o painful to have hairs yanked from this super sensitive area.

For those males and females who choose to remove hair from their pubic areas – Yes, some people do elect electrolysis, but most employ alternatives.

The most used hair removal alternative to electrolysis is the handy-dandy wet razor. One cannot say that it’s the most popular because of the inherent dangers of wielding a razor sharp blade around this area and because the skin is so sensitive, the results are more often than not uncomfortable after the first few hours, but still – Millions of people around the globe repeatedly remove their pubic hair with a wet razor.

Research reveals that a sizable group of people pay the high price for laser treatments to remove hair in the pubic area, but it’s a bit of a mystery why. Because it takes several sessions over a period of time to remove all the hair, and by that time, the hair has already started to grow back in where it was first removed. Not to mention the side effects along the way that can leave one feeling quite raw and sore.

There is waxing, but only for those with a high pain threshold … Although many can endure bikini line waxing as it’s a small area that can be done in about 15 minutes at a salon, so one could say it’s a popular hair removal process. But – It’s recommended that the skin be allowed to heal a few days before “agitating”, it.

Depilatories are only suitable for use strictly along the bikini lines. Again, the harsh chemicals that “melt”, the hair could cause severe problems if allowed anywhere else.

There is a rumor that there are those who tweeze their pubic hair – But that one’s too painful to even consider.

When it comes to legs – Well, shaving beats out all other alternatives to electrolysis. In fact, not much can be found about legs being a major target area for electrolysis or laser treatments. Probably because shaving is so easy and leg skin is not so sensitive that the results are quite satisfactory.

Of course, there are those who have their legs regularly waxed and they say it’s worth it because their legs stay smooth for as long as 3-8 weeks. And as long as they apply a good sunscreen, they don’t have to keep their legs hidden.

The same is said by those who use a depilatory every few days. They say it’s much easier than shaving every few days.

So there you have it – The most popular, or at least most used, alternative hair removal processes to electrolysis, from head to toe.

Except one – With just a little bit of research, you can discover the latest hair removal tool that has been streaking up the popularity chart. It’s inexpensive, easy to use, and removes hair quickly and safely from any part of the body without any unpleasant after effects.

More and more people are giving laser hair removal a shot! If you’re not into this hot, new treatment, then you’ve come to the right place. Imagine never having to deal with messy creams. Imagine talking to the grocery clerk and not having her stare at the hair on your upper lip. Imagine never having to hide your precious parts at the beach.

Stop imagining! You can make your dreams of hairless summers and hairless winters come true. First of all I believe its important for women and men to find out what causes abnormal hair growth before they start drastic measure to remove it. Doctors say hair usually grows abnormally due to hormones. Once youve determined whether you have health concerns related to your hair, then you can decide on the appropriate remedy.

I can tell you lasers are safe and effective in the removal of unwanted hair. A trained specialist can help you determine what treatment is best for you using your skin and hair type. With lasers you dont have to worry about shaving, tweezing, or waxing now and forever. Forever sounds like a long time, doesn’t it? Lasers produce a beam of light that is used to remove hair. The light passes through the skin to the hair follicle. Once it gets to the hair it basically kills it. Neat, huh? The process only takes less than an hour.

Lasers are attracted to dark colors. You’ll get the best results if your hair is darker than your complexion. You’re wondering if the laser has any side effects. It does if you have a tan. Tanning and lasering leads to burning. Ouch, it really hurts so youll want to beware of adding the two in combo. Also, it’s important to note that the laser doesn’t do a thing for blondes, white or gray haired people.

If you’re not ready to give lasers a shot, then there are several other techniques on the market that can help you get rid of your hair-raising problem. Let’s talk about the only permanent hair removal known to man right now. It’s called electrolysis. If you’re scared of needles, then this is not the treatment for you. You’ll want to make sure that you have not waxed or tweezed within a few days of having a treatment. This makes the hair follicle easier for the electrologist to reach.

The electrologist inserts a tiny needle into each hair follicle and uses a short impulse of energy to kill the root. Sounds, cool, huh? The hair is tweezed out one at a time. Sounds like an awfully long process. However, it only takes a few hours. You will most likely need more than one treatment to kill all of your hair. There are electrolysis kits that you can use at home, but I wouldn’t recommend it. You’re better off using a licensed electrologist.

Speaking of problems, what’s yours? Everyone has a specific area of the body where they want to be bald. Women usually hate facial hair on their upper lips, chin and sides of face. Hairs in those areas dont seem to bother men that much! Okay, I shouldn’t joke about it! Hair on the lip is very troubling to most women. It can be removed using a bleaching procedure.

Bleaching works if your hair is similar in color to your skin. Be careful, bleaching lightens hair in dark complexions. Ill never forget someone with a dark complexion once asked me if she could use a depilatory creams on the lip. No way, don’t even think! My response was fast and furious. Depilatories are harsh on sensitive skin and should never be placed on the lips or eyes areas.

The important thing to remember about depilatories is you should use them on the legs and thighs only. Depilatory creams dissolve the keratin in hair. As you can imagine thats some pretty strong stuff! Be sure to test patches of skin before you put the cream on. The cream can cause rashes and skin discolorations. It is possible to treat a negative reaction with an anti-bacterial solution and antibiotic.

Waxing on the other hand is a great way to remove hair from the legs and thighs and bikini area. Your skin will feel so clean, smooth and soft after this procedure. Waxing doesnt irritate your skin the way shaving and creams do. However, waxing is a temporary hair removal procedure. Waxing is similar to the sugaring procedure that is also temporary.

Sugaring is becoming more popular for people who want to be hairless in the bikini area. The sugar is warmed not at all like the high heat thats used in waxing. The warmed sugar is placed on the skin. Your technician will then remove the sugar with muslin strips. The sugar sticks mostly to the hair and not the skin. That makes it easier when its time to remove the hair. I highly recommend sugaring because the red bumps and other skin irritations are minimized with it.

Youre daring, right? You want a bikini wax, but you want it all over. Then, youll have to try what is called a Brazilian bikini wax. Have you ever been to Brazil? The natives are not at all ashamed of their bodies. The Brazilian wax removes hair all over the pubic area including the labia and buttocks. You can tell your technician how far to go, or not go. A patch of hair is sometimes left above the vagina.

Now, the procedure for getting a Brazilian wax is the same just about as with a bikini wax. Youll be given a paper thong if youre a little shy to put on for Brazilian bikini wax. Your hair will be cut using some scissors. The wax is then put on using a wooden stick. Strips of cloth are used to take the hair off. Tweezers are sometimes used to pick away stray hairs. Some folks say it hurts, others swear it works magic to improve their self-esteem and body image. You now have choices whether its shavers and creams or lasers and wax. You no longer have to live with a hair-raising experience. Get rid of it! The choice is yours.

You’ve probably heard about how lots of European women don’t give a fig about underarm hair or hair on their legs. But many other women are not as accepting of body hair as their European counterparts. And throughout history, women have been employing various techniques to do this: from ancient Egyptian women’s use of beeswax and sharp implements to eliminate leg hair up to the modern-day practices of waxing and the use of lasers to achieve a smooth and hairless complexion. Here, we’ll take a quick look at some of the pros and cons of laser hair removal and whether it’s the right path to take for a more hairless you.

Hair is removed via lasers in the following way: a series of low-level laser beams is targeted at hair follicles (or the root of the hair) in certain areas of the body. The hair then falls out and new growth is discouraged. Here are some of the reasons for the popularity of laser hair removal: Long-lasting results. The laser beams zoom in on hair follicles, either destroying them or significantly disabling them. Thus, hair is a lot slower to grow back and in some cases, they don’t grow back altogether. And any hair that grows back tends to be finer, thinner, and less visible. Imagine the time savings you could realize. Finally, freedom from regular bikini waxes, leg-shaving, and facial hair-plucking!

Broader and more convenient applications. Laser hair removal technologies and equipment have evolved in such a way that it is now possible to treat broad areas of the skin – such as the back and legs – in addition to localized areas like the skin above the upper lip and around the nipples. There is a wide variety of laser hair removal gadgets and equipment to suit individual cases.

Increased safety regulations. Hair removal via laser is a process approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). So, the techniques used must meet stringent regulations. In addition, individual states themselves are issuing criteria that laser hair removal cosmeticians must comply with in order to practice their trade.

Laser hair removal may seem like a godsend to many a woman, but she would do well to remember that it is not a “one-size-fits-all” sort of technology. Like most other cosmetic procedures today, it does have its disadvantages, the following of which are just a few. Slower results for dark-skinned or tanned women. Laser hair removal procedures are most suitable for individuals with light-colored skin and dark hair because the laser beam targets dark material. Dark skin pigmentation can prevent lasers from reaching the hair follicles more rapidly. Evidence also shows that the lighter a woman’s hair color, the less efficient the technology is in eliminating those problem hairs.

Laser hair removal treatment costs. It takes several sessions to rid a body part of hair, and each session costs on average $300 up to $1,000. It really depends on how much hair needs to be removed and the type of lasers used. Some clinics’ laser hair removal prices are calculated on a “per-pulse” basis and several hundred laser pulses may be needed to remove hair in just one area. Also, because hair grows in cycles, it’s almost a sure bet that repeat sessions will be needed to ensure that all unwanted hair is removed – which translates to more cash out of your pocket.

Potential side effects or no effect at all. All cosmetic procedures carry a risk of adverse effects, and laser hair removal is no exception. Patients have complained of first- and second-degree burns, blisters, and lesions. Others have noted that patterns of hair regrowth are patchy and unpleasant to look at. And still others have inexplicably experienced insignificant or no hair loss at all, despite their being ideal candidates for the procedure.

Laser hair removal is just one of the wonders of modern dermatology, technology that can make a woman look more beautiful in the shortest amount of time and in the safest way possible. Although procedures like this are constantly changing and improving, you shouldn’t just rush blindly into it. It’s important to consult your dermatologist and conduct your own research to determine whether you’ll be getting the maximum benefits that medical laser techniques can offer.

There are many different techniques to remove unwanted hair. Some of these include waxing, shaving, coils, electrolysis and laser. Although each has its advantages and disadvantages, they all perform the same function. That is removing unwanted hair.

One such technique that has become quite popular these days is laser hair removal. This technique works by using a laser on the hair at a specified wavelength that emits a specialized light. The light from the laser is passed through the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicle. This light actually targets the melanin (colour) in the hair follicle and damages it, thereby causing the hair to fall out. Interestingly, the use of certain laser for removing hair has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although the technique is popular, there are advantages and disadvantages of using this method.

Advantages of Laser Hair Removal

The laser hair removal process has advantages in that larger areas can be treated. In addition it is also safe enough to be used on all parts of the body such as the face, back, underarm, bikini line, legs and arms. Compared to electrolysis, it is less painful as the laser only causes a slight burning sensation compared to the needle prick feeling of electrolysis. Unlike shaving or waxing, laser hair removal is usually long lasting.

Disadvantages of Laser Hair Removal

One disadvantage for laser hair removal is that not everyone is the perfect candidate for this type of treatment. Those with lighter skin and dark hair have a much higher chance of permanent hair removal than grey, red or blonde hair. In addition, those with dark skin or who are tanned are also not good candidates as the laser may cause damage to their skin due to high pigment levels. The reason being is that dark hair contains a pigment called eumelanin which effectively absorbs more laser energy and therefore results in more effective destruction of the hair follicle. Due to the higher effectiveness of the treatment towards dark haired fair skin patients, it leads to fewer treatment and is therefore less costly. Other the other hand, grey, red and blonde hair contain a pigment called pheomelanin that absorbs less laser energy reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. Therefore extra treatment is required for the same effect. So before you sign up for this treatment, make sure you know the principal of this treatment. If you are not an ideal candidate, be prepared for extra treatment charges.

Laser hair removal is expensive due to the multiple treatments required. The reasons is that hair grows in a cycle that ranges from approximately 6 to 12 weeks and this is the amount of time that it takes hair to grow from the base of the follicle to the surface of the skin. As hair grows during these cycles, only a portion of the hair is being treated during this growth period with each laser treatment. Therefore multiple treatments (approximately four to eight depending upon your colour of your hair and skin) are required during this growth period. This is so that each treatment allows total coverage on all hairs during the various growth cycle. This can range from approximately a four to eight week interval. As discussed above, darked hair patients with fair skin require less treatment.

The average cost per treatment ranges from $500 and about four sessions are required. Again, this number will differ depending upon the size of the area treated and the colour of your skin and hair. To get an exact cost, a consultation on pricing is an individual process and it is best to discuss this with the laser center.

Once you have decided to undertake this treatment, make sure it is performed by an experienced laser treatment centre. Due to different state regulations, there has been varying level of compliance with laser hair removal centres and this has resulted in improper treatment by unskilled clinics. Some states require a doctor to perform the treatment, whilst for others; anyone including unskilled personnel can perform the treatment. Read the latest news on laser hair removal for more information. These improper unskilled clinic may result in burns (similar to sunburn), lesions, skin discolouration that can last several months, or patchy/patterned regrowth. One rule to remember is that cheaper is not always the best, so find the best laser hair removal centre around.

The laser has become a precision surgical instrument widely used for a variety of procedures. Most recently, lasers have been utilized for the quick, gentle removal of unwanted hairs. The laser works by sending a pulsating beam of light, of a particular wavelength to precise areas on the skin. The light passes directly through the skin, but is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and shaft. Once absorbed by laser light, the follicles are impaired from future growth, and eventually die off. Laser hair removal has come a long way since the first laser for hair removal received FDA clearance in mid 1998. Older generation normal-mode ruby lasers were very slow, very painful and worked only on individuals with very dark hair and very light skin. Today, lasers can work on all skin colors and some lasers are even safe for treating tanned skin.

Lasers are not for everyone, and their proper use requires great skill, training and expertise. The laser technician at minimum must be a Certified Laser Specialist who has graduated from an accredited school for laser. Generally it is best to have a laser-trained dermatologist, or plastic surgeon perform the procedure, in case of complications. For the laser to be effective, the hair pigment must be darker than the surrounding skin pigment. If this is not the case, the treatment will not work and may have harmful complications. Additionally very darkly pigmented people absorb too much laser energy in their skin and are not ideal candidates. Tanned patients with light hair are not candidates either.

Light skin makes laser hair removal easier to perform. Fewer treatments are required, and better, faster results are obtained. People with darker skin can be treated, but results are slower, more sessions are required, and greater expertise is required on the part of the doctor. Coarse dark hair responds the best to laser treatment, light hair is more difficult to treat. Blonde or red hair is very difficult to treat, multiple treatment sessions are required, and results are variable. Laser hair removal must be individualized for each patient.

Although one laser session can produce impressive hair removal, generally, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to see optimal results. In large part this is due to the fact that laser hair removal is most effective for hair, which is in the growth phase. Since hair grows in cycles, not all of the hairs are in the growth phase at any given time. Additional sessions are necessary to catch all of the hairs when they are in this phase.

Any area, except adjacent to the eye, where there is excess hair can be treated. The most common areas requested are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, breast region, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.

The costs for a single laser hair removal treatment vary depending on the part of the country, and range from $300.00 to $500.00 per session. Consumers are advised, as with all forms of medical care, to seek the center of highest quality, rather than lowest cost. Laser hair removal requires a great deal of skill, individual attention, experience, and a trained, caring, professional staff.

After treatment, most patients have a mild sunburn-type sensation that fades in 2-3 hours. Moisturizers and/or cool compresses can help during this time. Small blister areas can be treated with topical antibiotic until resolved. Sun block should be used for up to 6 weeks after treatment if sun exposure is anticipated. No waxing, shaving, or dying should be performed for 2 weeks after treatment. Pretreatment restrictions are also applicable to the post treatment period.

It must be remembered that it is impossible to predict the exact result a patient will achieve with laser hair removal, especially with regard to how many sessions a given individual will require. The indication for laser hair removal is mostly subjective. A desire for hair removal is the only criterion for laser hair removal.

If you’re 1 of the millions of people who have hair growing where you don’t want it, today’s good news is, you have a wide range of effective hair removal options available to you.

Reasons For Hair Removal

People’s reasons for wanting hair removed run the gamut from medical necessity to “just because I feel like it.” Many women include hair removal as part of their normal cosmetic routine. They shave their legs and underarms, pluck their eyebrows, and have pubic hair trimmed or removed to accommodate today’s fashions.

Most men shave their facial hair, and men sometimes shave their body hair for cosmetic purposes, as well. To enhance their performance, their appearance, or both, many athletes — particularly swimmers and body builders — will undergo hair removal procedures.

Some people with hair growth disorders like hypertrichosis or hirsutism use hair removal procedures for medical reasons.

Temporary Or Permanent Removal

Hair removal procedures can be separated into 2 categories: temporary and permanent.

Temporary techniques work only for short periods of time, and are subject to the body’s normal hair growth cycle. They include shaving, plucking, waxing, and a wide selection of creams. Most people use temporary hair removal procedures at home, but they can also be obtained in a spa or salon.

Permanent Hair Removal Techniques

The “Permanent” procedures outlined below seek to remove unwanted hair in such a way that it returns never or, at worst, over a long time period. These hair removal methods are normally performed by licensed hair removal specialists.

Electrolysis

With electrolysis each hair follicle is treated individually. A licensed specialist injects a needle into the hair follicle and induces an electric charge that destroys the follicle’s ability to produce hair. This process can take months, depending upon the size of the area being treated. This is a somewhat painful process, and side effects can include scarring and infection. Costs for electrolysis can run as high as $3,000 for the pubic area or legs.

Laser

The laser hair removal process uses a small laser beam to destroy the hair follicles. This is a relatively painless method that works best on people with light-colored skin and dark hair. It is not recommended for anyone who is deeply tanned. It costs about $1,000 for removal of facial hair, and anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 for removal of hair from the legs and pubic area. Laser hair removal is an FDA-approved process, to be performed only by a licensed and trained professional.

Photo Epilation/Pulsed Laser

This FDA-approved procedure uses a pulsed light beam to destroy the hair follicles. Photo Epilation/Pulsed Laser is especially effective for removing hair from sensitive areas, such as the underarms and the bikini area. Unlike laser hair removal, this method has no restrictions regarding hair color, skin color, or tanning. Depending on the area of the body to be treated, costs can run from $500 to $2,000 and up.

Removal of unwanted hair, for any reason whatsoever, is easier and more available today than ever before.

Both males and females have unwanted hairs in their body. Everybody wishes to be fresh and energetic. It can be done in a many number of ways according the level of hairs in the body. It is found that around 80% of the women and around 50% of the men are going for hair removal in some form or the other. Facial hair removal is more popular among men and women.

Hair removal in the hands, legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, face, and eyebrows are commonly practiced these days. Sports persons go for hair removal since it will cut down the wind resistance and improve their competitive speeds. There is a report saying that hair removal salons are getting more and more men customers for removing hair.

Different devices are used for hair removal in different parts of the body. Waxing, sugaring, and electrolysis are the most preferred methods for permanent body hair removal. Laser treatments are also used for permanent body hair removal. Waxing is a method of hair removal in which wax is applied over the hairs and then a cotton strip is rubbed on the wax in the direction of the hair growth.

Waxing and sugaring are done for male body hair removal. Waxing removes the hairs from the roots and hence the regrowth of hairs in the removed area takes between 6 to 8 weeks. After hair removal through waxing even if the hair grows it is thinner and is sparser in the area. There are not many hairs in that area. Upon further hair removal the hair may go off permanently. Usage of a hair growth inhibitor after male body hair removal through waxing is usually done to reduce the growth of hairs in that area.

Then the cotton strip is removed in the opposite direction of the hair growth for permanent body hair removal. Sugaring is also a method that is used for hair removal permanently. The difference is the sugar paste instead of wax for removal. Whether a person is using waxing or sugaring he is advised to use a hair growth inhibitor after the removal of hairs to prevent hair growth or to slow down the growth of hairs.

Most of the sports persons who are involved in the sports like swimming and cycling opt for permanent body hair removal, since permanent body hair removal would improve their speeds by reducing the air friction. There are many devices that are used for permanent body hair removal. Each device comes with its own functionality and ease of use with a price tag that is affordable.

Electrolysis and Laser treatments remove the hairs permanently from the skin. In these methods the hair follicle is destroyed so that the hair does not grow again. Electrolysis method uses needles to supply electric current to the hair follicles. This electric current creates some chemical changes or generates heat to destroy the hair follicles. In Laser treatment the laser beams are directed towards the hair follicles to destroy it. Laser treatments are costly when compared to other methods of hair removal.
